Method 2

Setup Smart TV VPN using SmartDNS

You can also access website unblocking features by setting up a SmartDNS on your Samsung Smart TV. SmartDNS is not a VPN, because it doesn’t provide encryption or any other online security feature, but it can definitely match a VPN’s capability in allowing you to access geo-restricted content like Netflix US on your Smart TV.

SmartDNS are offered by VPN Providers themselves, exclusively for mediastreamers like a Smart TV. Here is you can set it up on your Samsung Smart TV:

  1. For setting up SmartDNS on your Smart TV, you will need a unique DDNS hostname
  2. Dynu.com is a great service to acquire this unique DDNS hostname. You can any other service that you prefer as per your discretion
  3. Now, setup your personal account with Dynu.com
  4. This will require you to fill in very simple details like your email address. Dynu.com is a free service, so there is an extra stop for payments here
  5. Go to your email and click on the verification email sent by Dynu.com
  6. Now log in to your account using your user credentials
  7. When you have logged in successfully, select Control Panel > DDNS Services
  8. Now you will be on a page where on the top right corner, you will see a Blue Button saying “Add”. Click on this
  9. You will now be presented with two options i.e. “Use our domain name”, if you want to setup a new domain name for yourself, then click on this option, or if you an existing domain name then just simply enter it in to option two.
  10. After clicking on either of these options, click on “Add
  11. Disable “Wildcard Alias” and then click on “Enable IPV6 Address
  12. Now click on the option for “Save
  13. Your Dynu account is now valid
  14. Once you have your new hostname, courtesy Dynu.com, you need to register this name with your VPN provider. We are using ExpressVPN as an example here. The procedure for this doing on other Best VPNs is quite similar to ExpressVPN
  15. Buy a valid ExpressVPN subscription and login to your account using your user credentials
  16. Now, from the options bar placed at the top, click on “DNS Settings
  17. In the drop down menu, scroll down and click on “Dynamic DNS Registration
  18. Now enter the same hostname here that you made with your Dynu account
  19. When entering your hostname here, remember to put the suffix Dynu.com if you had used Dynu to create your domain name. If you had entered your own Domain name at Dynu, simply enter that domain name here without any suffix
  20. Now you have to click on “Save Hostname”, after which you will a notification saying “Updated”
  21. A new “Updated” notification will appear just below the bar where you entered your Domain name
  22. Its imperative to wait at least 15 minutes before moving on to the next step as this is the time it takes for ExpressVPN or any other provider to start detecting the change in IP
  23. Now open your Samsung Smart TV and then press the “Menu” button on your TV remote

*Important Note: The “Enter” Button on your Smart Remote is placed between the arrow buttons!

  1. Push the “Down” button till you reach the option for “Network” and then press Enter
  2. Now choose “Network Status” by pressing the Enter button on your remote again
  3. Your Smart TV will now display your connection status and a list of options. Choose “IP Settings” by pressing Enter button on your remote
  4. Now you will be in the menu for IP settings. Click on “DNS Setting” from the menu by pressing Enter button on your remote
  5. Now select “Enter Manually” and then enter the Media Streamer DNS Server Address you acquired from ExpressVPN. After you have entered the DNS Server address, click Enter.
  6. Now validate the connection by clicking on “OK” by pressing Enter button on your remote
